Autumn is here — it’s time to squeeze in some more adventures before the frigid winter air arrives! The next few months promise perfect weather for outdoor activities. I can’t wait to take a hike in the crisp rall air, with a hint of wood smoke floating by.

What are your favorite fall adventures? I particularly love nature hikes, where I can collect beautiful photographs of the my favorite season.

P.S. I have those athletic sandals and they are awesome for just about any kind of adventure!

In a Word: Cicada

As we enter the fall season, I am reflecting on things that characterize summertime (besides the heat, of course!). The nighttime buzz of cicadas came to mind. We lived in a very rural area when I was a child and I used to find cicada shells all over the place. I always thought they were kind of icky. Later in life, I saw photos of cicadas just after molting and realized how pretty and delicate they are.

In a Word: Dew

Isn’t morning dew such a beautiful sight? It feels fresh and innocent. Dew has the same quality as a new field of snow — untouched. I work on a later-than-norm schedule so I rarely see dew. When I do, I am reminded how quiet and still it is in the morning. The air has the feeling of potential, as if the world could be entirely good for a short time.

In a Word: Sun-dried

Hanging laundry by Niek Bokkers

I love the sound of something being ‘sun-dried,’ don’t you? It conjures of dreamy, romantic feelings about the relationship between humans and nature.

I have to be honest though, I really cannot handle clothing dried on a line outside. Mostly because of how scratchy line-dried towels and jeans can be. My grandma dried clothes on a line when I was a kid and I had to suffer in silence. Clothes on a line sure look pretty, though …

We were on vacation in Disney World last week. Although the sun came out, the last couple of days were overcast. But I think I prefer that. Cool winds, a light fog and grey skies? That is my cup of tea. What is your favorite kind of weather?
