Marius Wathne

Student work by Marius Wathne

I love visiting botanical gardens and arboretums whenever I can, mostly due to my nonexistent green thumb. It’s an opportunity for me to get up close and personal with flowers that don’t bloom around my yard or neighbors’ yard and a chance at avoiding awkward glances from my neighbors — you know, say if I want to study a flower outside their front window. Am I creeping you out yet?

Oftentimes I’ll keep pamphlets for reference, but rarely do they ever resemble freelance graphic designer Marius Wathne’s remarkable design concept for the Royal Botanic Garden in Melbourne, Australia. Read more about the project on Marius’ portfolio.

Marius’ design and execution is enchanting. The entire piece is oozing with beauty, from the artistic typography, to the stunning photography, and the smartly-designed layout. This is information design at it’s finest.

In a Word: Honey

Dripping with honey by Laura Crotty

Hello, Dearest Nature friends. Today, I present all things honey-related. Okay, not all things, but some darn cute ones. Honey is a beautiful color, a wonder of nature, and yummy to boot! AND a natural sweetener. AND moisturizing. How cool is that?

The only thing I dislike about honey is the sticky factor. Last week, my husband accidentally dumped quite a bit of honey on the counter. I won’t go into the specifics of how that happened but let’s just say the cleanup was brutal. Everything in the honey’s path (including my hands!) was gummy . I guess that’s the price you pay for deliciousness!

Now, for a bit of honey trivia. Did you know it would only take one ounce of honey to fuel a bee’s flight around the world? The bee and it’s honey outshines us in quite a few ways – check out more trivia here.

Neve/Hawk

As a web/graphic designer, I often peruse sites like dribbble and The Best Designs to keep current with the latest design trends and to discover new-to-me graphic/web designers. Once upon a time ago, I happened upon the work of Bob Galmarini on dribbble,

where I followed a link back to his clothing company called Neve Inspired, also owned and operated by his wife, Kris. I instantly fell in love with the site’s design, and even more so, the site’s products. Bob and Kris carry a line of fun wearables for children, like t-shirts that

feature Clumsy, a font created by artist and illustrator Kyle Steed.

Everything Bob and Kris create is illustrated, hand-sewn, and hand-screen printed in their home in Charleston, South Carolina.

Kris and Bob recently released a new line of clothing called Neve/Hawk (named after their two children) this year and successfully received funding through Kickstarter to debut the line at Playtime New York last month. Everything about the line is playful, stylish, and most importantly comfortable.

Fight for Creativity

We love to imagine and create, and at neve / hawk we get to turn that into something real. This privilege of ours comes after a lifetime of being encouraged through school arts education programs — to explore our creativity through art, dance, music, illustration, and theater.” — Bob and Kris Galmarini

Bob and Kris’s purpose behind creating the line is an admirable one, too. They are committed to keeping the arts alive and thriving in public schools, so with every sale, they are donating a portion to fight for creativity.

Organic Type

Organic Type by Neuarmy

This week’s Type Tuesday is brought to you by Neuarmy, a design company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The project, which has been featured on We Love Typography, was created using different kinds of natural elements like flowers, animals, insects, fruits, plants, dirt, etc.

I like how some of which look photorealistic (like, the dirt on the letter “G” and the tree bark on the letter “R”).
